Description
A large dorid, reaching about 11 cm in length in life. Ground colour pale greyish-red, with rather short, irregular blackish-blue longitudinal streaks on the body and stronger streaks descending from the rim down the sides of the gill mound. The gills, rhinophore sheaths, mouth tube and genital papilla are darker. The dorsum is very finely shagreened. The mantle is broadly arched and projects forward over the head and laterally up to 8 mm, completely covering the foot. The gill comprises seven tripinnate leaves up to 1 cm tall; the rhinophore club is about 4 mm with roughly 30 thin lamellae. The penis is armed with a long, straight aculeus — a striking feature of the species.Distribution
Type locality: Aibukit, Palau Islands (Mare palaense). The species is now known to range widely across the Indo-West Pacific as a large dorid.Etymology
The specific epithet rubescens is the present participle of Latin rubesco ("to become red, redden"), referring to the reddish living colour highlighted in the original diagnosis.Remarks
Originally placed as the type species of the new genus Kentrodoris; later transferred to Jorunna. The Japanese name "Bûche de Noël umiushi" alludes to the species' resemblance to the log-shaped Christmas cake.References
