Description
Up to 45 mm in length, with an elongate, aeolidiform body. The rhinophores have a long stalk and a small perfoliate clavus, without a sheath. The gill consists of seven tripinnate plumes arranged in a slightly more than half-circular arc, with the rear of the arc occupied by the anus. The frontal veil is slightly expanded and bears 6–10 simple digitiform processes. The back margin is distinctly defined and bears a row of small subconical papillae; similar papillae are also distributed across the back, sides, and tail crest. The genital orifice lies on the right side, just behind the head. The oral tentacles are lobiform, and the antero-lateral corners of the foot are slightly produced into obtuse points.Coloration
The ground colour is translucent yellowish-white, but is almost entirely obscured by dense black speckles and irregular streaks of yellowish-brown and dark pigment. The papillae are tipped with light yellow. The sole of the foot is uniformly yellowish-white. Rhinophores have a dark stalk; the clavus is black with a white tip. Jaw-plates are well-developed and horn-yellow in colour.Distribution
Type locality: Tomioka, Amakusa, Japan (January 1933, fairly common on Zostera seagrass).Etymology
The original description (Baba, 1937) states: "It is here named P. fujitai in honour of Dr. Tsunenobu Fujita." Fujita appears in Baba's acknowledgements (Part I) as one of the colleagues who provided specimens.Remarks
In the family Polyceridae. Resembles the Vancouver Island species Polycera zosterae O'Donoghue, 1924 in habitat (on seagrass) and external form, but differs in colour, number of gill plumes, and number of lateral teeth.References
