Description

A small Aeolidiidae, body length up to 12 mm. Ground colour translucent brown. A wide yellow-white longitudinal band runs from the head along the dorsal midline. Cerata in three groups, thick and short, slightly curled inward. The inner face of the cerata bears bluish-white markings, and the tips taper to a small point. Rhinophores match the body colour and bear many papillae; oral tentacles are tentaculiform with yellow-white markings.

Distribution

Type locality: vicinity of the Amakusa Marine Biological Laboratory (Kumamoto, Japan). Subsequent records extend across the western Pacific (Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan).

Etymology

The specific epithet japonica is a geographic adjective referring to Japan, the country of origin.

Remarks

At one point reassigned to Berghia japonica, but later restored to Baeolidia after neotype designation.
