Description

Ground colour translucent white. The outer edge of the mantle is bordered by a yellow marginal band, with a row of mantle glands lying just inside this band. The dorsum bears scattered small conical tubercles and several irregular longitudinal lines of vermilion to orange-red. The rhinophore stalks are translucent white while the clubs are tinted purple. The seven gill leaves are also purple.

Distribution

Type locality: Izu Peninsula, central Honshu, Japan. Mainly recorded along the Japanese coast.

Etymology

The specific epithet katoi honours Mr Katô. the 1938 monograph does not give biographical detail; the Japanese vernacular name "Katô-iroumiushi" was later proposed by a 1953 paper following the same dedication.

Remarks

Gosliner et al. 2015 transferred this species from Chromodoris to Goniobranchus but treated their figured material as an undescribed Goniobranchus sp. 37. We retain the name Goniobranchus katoi following the current WoRMS treatment.
